“Do you have to listen to all this swearing?”

My mum HATES most of the music I listen to, so I wasn’t surprised she said this within 30 seconds of getting in my car.

Since I went to New York in the summer of 1989, I have been fascinated with Hip Hop music and the culture. I remember listening to cassette tapes of one of my all time favourite rappers, Big Daddy Kane, and whenever he swore, I would turn the music down so no one could hear. However, when I used to “rebel” …

I’ve always wanted to start up a school based on the teachings that I have learnt from life. I feel the lessons taught in Music, Television, Film & Sport probably helped me more than any teacher from school and furthered my career than my degree. I have tested these in 3 areas to help teach others so far:

As a trainer in social media I often use references from the 4
When I helped improve Borderline D/C students increase their grades (B/As) in English GCSE coursework (was littered with references).
Whenever I am …

Monday, March 21, 2011 in Music, What I Learnt Today

I was listening to an interview with James Brown and what really stood out for me was the following:

Interviewer: “So what has been the best performance of your career?”

James Brown: “It’s always my last one”

I have always know James Brown was a perfectionist and just listening to that answer sums up the performance side of this man.

What I Learnt Today Was…

…that you are only as good as your last performance. If I gave my best then not only should I be satisfied but also …

Right now i’m reading “Do you” by Russell Simmons. Great book but it’s more of a spiritual journey rather than a “How to make money in business” type book. I started reading it about a year ago but it was too “much” for me then. Now i’m in a different place and starting to hear the words rather than just read them.

Years ago I remember watching an episode of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Will was talking to this kid (Ramon). He was telling Will how he was …

I have told this story to many people already but the “traditional” word of mouth route will only spread it so far….and most people do not believe me. Now I have heard people having bad luck in the music industry. I have heard people stealing other people’s ideas in the music industry. I have even heard about some serious back stabbing but this story has to be at the top of all misfortunes. Imagine you created the song “Blame it on the Boogie” with your band, you perform it on …

The Wiseman – Canibus

One of the most intelligent hip Hop songs I have heard is “Poet Laureate 2″ by Canibus.  If you have not heard it then click here. Also open up 2 browsers:
1) song lyrics
2) Google search to look for the terms, the theories and anything else you might not know.

It’s ridiculous and to this day baffles me how he knew this much. Anyway there is one part of the song that states:

“a wise man sees failure as progress/a fool divorces his knowledge and misses …

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 in Best Posts, Music, The Power of Digital

I just watched a very interesting Panorama special on the BBC about Internet music sharing.

It talked about a proposed new law that is threatening to disconnect the millions of internet users who unlawfully download free music, films and TV. Jo Whiley looked at how broadband use at home may never be the same, and could even be cut off. It left me thinking is Illegal downloading the Gift or the Curse for the music industry?

Some interesting facts on why it is a curse:

- Record Industry claims to be losing £200m …

One of the funniest and yet brilliant music success stories i’ve seen actually happened to my former flatmate, Lee Kirby.

About 3 years ago, Lee picked up the guitar for the first time and spent hours practising and writing songs. During this period he also started singing songs in Vietnamese, which was not surprising because he loves the Vietnamese culture. This started 7 years earlier when he said he would be the 1st English player to play professional football in Vietnam. He achieved this and since then his love affair began. …

Twitter was definitely THE social media network phenomenon of 2009. Both celebrities and us common folk alike got slightly carried away with the fun of being able to randomly announce to our followers what we were doing, as and when we wanted. Whether as a means to occupy us whilst bored at work or on the move using phones, everyone seemed to get the Twitter bug and became addicted to the challenge of communicating in no more than 140 characters!

One of Twitter’s big attractive features was that …
