I just got back from a meeting and I can’t believe I’m still hearing people saying social media is a fad. I thought everybody was over this by now and had come to the realisation that it is a way of life!!!!….but there are some nonbelievers out there and I guess it is The Worst Kept Secret’s job to convert them.

When I first started working for a social networking company in 2006, I could understand why people were saying this then, as there were only a couple of major players in the game.  3 short years later we have some of the biggest websites in the world in the social media camp and if you go to alexa.com and have a look at the top 10 global websites, 5 out of the top 9 are social media.  (and Twitter hasn’t even reached there yet!)

Social media is peer-to-peer, two-way communication and if you think it is going away any time soon then think again. For anyone who is still not convinced look at it this way.

Right now:

  • we all get to be critics and can make our opinions public. ie, reviews on Restaurants, films, holidays etc
  • we can get instant feedback from anyone across the world,
  • we did not have this opportunity before and only a selected few had the power,
  • our opinions can make a difference in people’s lives

Do you think the general public is going to give back the power and control that they have always wanted?  …..Would you? I think not.

“Power, however it has evolved, whatever its origins, will not be given up without a struggle.” (SHULAMITH FIRESTONE)

I guess I should listen to what Shulamith Firestone states here and be patient with old minded thinking people.  The Internet is winning right now and it’s just a matter of time before everyone realises that social media is here to stay.

Thank God for that!!!!
